The Miracle of the Grotto painting is the piece that holds the most special place in my heart, to date. The experiences that inspired me were so personal and frightening, that I had to find a way to express what I was going through. The story behind the birth of the painting is so dear to me that I have dedicated this entire page to it.

In 2011, my Dad and I had been living in Fort Collins, Colorado for about seven years. We had both made the decision that it was time to move back home to Texas. We loved the beauty and serenity of the Colorado Mountains, but we missed the comfort of having our family within driving distance. Another big concern was our health. I continued to struggle with my Lupus and I was worried about the health of my Dad. We had to put our beautiful home up for sale.

Of course, things did not move smoothly. I went to a doctor appointment where I was told that I had a tumor or cyst on my ovary. Being that my mom had passed away in 1987 from ovarian cancer, I was concerned. However, living with Lupus and constant medical appointments, I felt a sense of peace. What will be, will be. My blood work was done and my OVA 1, which is an ovarian cancer marker, was positive. With pending robotic surgery in two weeks, we took our home off the market.

In the midst of all of the “not knowing” what was going to happen, I had a dream. I was in the mountains and came upon a beautiful brick-type structure that had a light shining from the edges of the door. The structure was encased in climbing roses that enhanced the beauty. I decided to try and paint what I had seen in my dream. After a week of painting, I asked my Dad if the painting looked familiar. He said that it was a Grotto. It’s a place where people can kneel and pray; a place of comfort. As I painted, I continued to pray for healing and God’s will be done. At that point, the Grotto became very special to me. I knew that one day I would look back at the painting and remember a time of struggle and uncertainty. I would remember a time of desperately wanting to be close to my children and family in Texas.

The painting continued on the Grotto and just became natural. One day, my Dad and I had been through a very stressful day. Someone we cared about was not doing well. We sat in the den, which was also my painting studio, and Dad proceeded to talk to me about the situation. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something moving in my Grotto painting. I noticed my clouds moving and a white ball of light flowing back and forth from behind the mountains and up and out of the clouds. I thought I was seeing things. Was it an outside light? I calmly asked Dad if he noticed anything different in my painting. He looked over and was in shock. He saw what I was experiencing, also! It was not just my imagination. I picked up my cell phone and sat in front of the painting. I took one picture after another as my Dad and I felt we were in the midst of experiencing a miracle. The light was not coming from outside. The water in the painting appeared to be moving. A bright white glow was coming from inside the Grotto. The ball of light moved back and forth across the sky as a rainbow began to shine down through the trees. The rocks were shimmering a silver color. After the ball of light moved to a certain point, the rainbow moved through the trees. This phenomenon continued for about forty minutes until it slowly moved up into the clouds.

After this experience, Dad and I discussed what we had just witnessed. We looked for any logical excuse or reason to dismiss what we had seen. We just could not find any! Within the next few days, I downloaded the pictures to my computer to have them printed. When I received the prints, we just continued to look at them in awe.

I did not readily share the pictures of this beautiful experience with many people because there are so many skeptics who would not be able to comprehend and open themselves up to the possibility of the miracle. This whole experience brought me hope in such a dark time in my life. My spiritual connection with God increased more than I ever thought possible. This painting is a true reminder to me that we are never alone in the trials that we face, no matter how big or how small.

I am including photos of the experience with each Miracle of the Grotto reproduction. In addition, 15% of my profits from my repro- ductions will go to the Cancer and Lupus Foundations.

By the way…my biopsy was benign and we are back home in Texas close to everyone we love.
