The mourning dove has been viewed by some as a symbol of sorrow and gloom, while others have viewed it in a positive light throughout history.  It has become a representation of life, renewal, peace, and hope.

The dove is a small pigeon with a pointed tail, allowing it to move more gracefully.  Mourning doves are greyish brown in color and are noted for staying true to their mates.

The mourning dove is the most celebrated bird in sacred scripture (The Holy Bible). The three important symbols of the dove are the symbol of the Holy Spirit, the symbol of Hope and the symbol of Peace.  The Holy Spirit is symbolized by Jesus’ baptism and the cleansing of original sin.  A symbol of hope is seen as the dove returns to the Ark with an olive leaf signifying life in the biblical story of Noah’s Ark.  The dove signifies peace as represented by Picasso.  In 1949, Picasso drew a dove when he was commissioned to design the logo for the World Peace Congress.  It has since become the symbol for Peace.

Divin’s depiction of the mourning dove encompasses all of the spiritual representations.  As it gracefully perches on the olive branch in the moonlight, a sense of peace and hope is emitted.
